INTERNATIONAL HARDWARE FAIR 2022: the industry’s family get-together in Cologne

by | Sep 14, 2022

EISENWARENMESSE – INTERNATIONAL HARDWARE FAIR For the first time in four and a half years, the EISENWARENMESSE – INTERNATIONAL HARDWARE FAIR 2022 will present new products from the hardware industry and sector trends. Products ranging from tools to accessories to fasteners and fixings, to fittings and building and DIY supplies from around 1,400 exhibitors from 50 countries will be launched and showcased in Cologne from 25 to 28 September.

The EISENWARENMESSE 2022 comes at a challenging time for the industry where securing supplies of energy and raw materials has developed new elements of complexity. The pandemic and the ongoing war in Ukraine have either severed or temporarily interrupted many supply chains, warehouses are contending with shortages and waning consumption and the search for skilled workers is desperate.

“Where else could you find a better place than the EISENWARENMESSE – INTERNATIONAL HARDWARE FAIR in Cologne, the industry’s international family get-together, to meet new and existing partners and discuss solutions with peers from across the world? You can’t do that by video call – it takes so much trust, and the best way to create it is still by having a conversation face to face,” says Matthias Becker, Director of the EISENWARENMESSE.

Trends to try out first-hand

Together with face-to-face conversations, EISENWARENMESSE will focus on the feel and functionality of products. It is crucial to hold an item in both hands, inspect it from all sides and try it out – and not just when it comes to hand tools. All segments at the EISSENWARENMESSE will benefit from first-hand experience at the event, from electrical appliances to ladders and construction scaffolding, furniture fittings and standard DIY supplies.

The DIY Boulevard in Hall 11.1 is set to feature 60 international exhibitors this year. The exhibit is hosted in cooperation with the association for manufacturers of construction, DIY and garden products, Herstellerverband Haus & Garten e.V. and will reach a new length of 272 metres.

The German tool manufacturers’’ association, Fachverband Werkzeugindustrie e.V. will also stage a special event that will highlight how its members are contributing to tackling the future issues of sustainability and electromobility. The participating companies and association spokespeople will be available to speak to media representatives at a press event hosted at stand D001 C002 in Hall 10.1 at 11 am on 26 September.

An overview of events can be found on the EISENWARENMESSE website.

Green at heart: the sustainability megatrend

Sustainability is no longer a trend for the skilled trades but has become an integral part of their identity. After all, their trades are about creating lasting value. The hardware industry is therefore focusing on long-term solutions for tools and appliances, including optimising products to conserve energy and resources.

For example, new machinery now enables high-quality products to be manufactured from recycled materials. The latest new sustainable launches range from recyclable cases and transport aids to brushes made from 100% recycled plastic and wall plugs that have been produced from regrowing materials. Other manufacturers are reducing their material consumption by slimming down their products which means processing significantly less plastic. Natural materials such as wood from sustainably managed forests are increasingly being used and sought after in tool production as well.

Mobile energy: the new battery systems

Today, there is hardly an issue as topical as energy consumption. Manufacturers in the hardware industry have been working to improve the energy efficiency of their tools for some time now. Sophisticated battery systems are both protecting the environment and increasingly making work easier, with high-performance storage batteries now offering an emissions-free and quiet alternative to diesel generators. The latest portable power stations ensure an uninterrupted power supply even with use and projects, like working with large angle grinders or cement mixers. Batteries today can be produced without toxic heavy metals and are extremely quick to charge while boasting long life and low maintenance.

The problem of most batteries only being compatible with multiple appliances within the same brand is being presented with new solutions. The latest tools are giving users complete freedom to connect to any battery pack, regardless of the manufacturer’s preferred brand. This provides users more mobility, convenience, and above all, more cost-efficiency.

Just do it: ergonomic tools for greater comfort

Expectations for comfort and safety at work are rising. The hardware industry is responding to the demand by improving the ergonomic designs of products and making them simpler to use for all experience levels. One example of this can be seen in the new cordless electric screwdrivers which utilise extreme lightweight and ergonomic housing. Hand screwdrivers are also making improvements with flexible cushioning under the soft grip. The cushioning optimally converts the force applied into a rotational movement making it much easier and more comfortable to use. Ratchet handles are also improved for comfort while working with their new quick-locking for easily changing nuts.

Also comfortable to use, are new tools with easier operation features like nail punches that can be operated without a hammer with the same high power impact. Cordless nail guns that operate using compressed air can be used anywhere and ensure independence from power cables. Battery-powered electric wheelbarrows ensure to help transport heavy items over challenging terrain around the home or building site. Easier operation is also a feature of new toolboxes that can now automatically open thanks to integrated gas springs, even when fully loaded.

New freedom at work: solutions for flexibility

To aid in making work easier, many manufacturers are offering products with enhanced flexibility. These include a series of clever solutions developed to simplify storage or transportation, such as new toolboxes that transform into a backpack in next to no time at all. This allows for multiple tool organisers to be used at once, as it is now easy to carry several at a time. New transport trolleys can be completely configured and customised for different uses as well.

The new mobile access solutions for renovations or interior construction offer the benefits of greater freedom at work. Innovative scaffold units can be transported and stored while still assembled. Their low width means they can fit into many niches and gaps. Space-saving storage solutions have been developed for quick-folding clamping tables and workbenches as well, which can withstand high loads despite their low weight.

EISENWARENMESSE – INTERNATIONAL HARDWARE FAIR Precision and simplification: digital upgrades for products

Digitalisation is advancing all aspects of home and work life, including skilled trades. New apps and connectivity features simplify tasks on construction sites. Manufacturers are offering digital upgrades for marking and measuring tools to further enhance precision as well as improve the processing of results with ease of touch operation. They also have intuitive software and a larger storage capacity to enable faster programming. In addition, several functions such as spirit level and angle finder can be combined in a single device using Bluetooth interface and an app.

The push for digitalisation can be seen in other areas of the hardware industry as well. In the machine and plant construction fields operators can register on an online service platform and use a digital 3D view of their system to search for replacement parts. The same view allows them to check availability and initiate an enquiry or order directly. New user databases are available for high-quality storage cabinet systems that now operate with chip identification or facial recognition. This means that they can record who has been granted access and when or restrict access at specific times.
