Mitre 10 NZ celebrates 50 years of success

New Zealand’s homegrown hardware brand, Mitre 10, is celebrating 50 years of making home improvement dreams “Easy As”.

June 20 is the official anniversary of the day eight stores came together in 1974, with a mission to sell a whole range of DIY and trade products to Kiwi’s throughout New Zealand.

As part of the 50-year birthday celebrations, Mitre 10 has released limited-edition anniversary merchandise, is also giving away many prizes to customers, and is also hosting promotions and activities both online and in-store, according to a Scoop Media report.

Mitre 10 New Zealand Chief Marketing Officer, Jules Lloyd-Jones says the 50-year birthday is huge milestone that would not be possible without the support of its customers and communities.

“While we pride ourselves on rolling our sleeves up and giving back to the community whenever we can, we thought this occasion called for an extra special thank you to the people who have backed us all the way too,” she said in the report.

From ‘Mitre 10 Changing Rooms’ to the landmark ads featuring Lyn of Tawa, Gary McCormick, the sandpit kids and today’s ‘With you all the Way’ pair Pete and Grant, Mitre 10 has found its way into the homes of Kiwis across the country for five decades.

The iconic brand has been voted New Zealand’s most trusted home improvement brand 14 times in the Reader’s Digest Trusted Brand Awards, and is consistently named one of the most trusted brands overall.

Mitre 10’s primary commitment to giving locals a hand has continued throughout the years, with the co-operative delivering 13 new playgrounds to deserving schools through ‘Project Playground’.

It has also held long-term partnerships with the Graeme Dingle Foundation and Takahe Recovery Programme, and funded more than 40,000 native trees through ‘Trees That Count’. More recently Mitre 10 partnered with Kindness Collective to spread joy across the motu, through communal food gardens and outdoor play spaces.

Despite all of these successfully run programs, what is most special about turning 50 is that Mitre 10 has the legacy of so many amazing people who have worked with Mitre 10 over the years, Ms Lloyd-Jones said in the report.

“Some of our long-time team members are show champion chicken breeders, newspaper publishers, retired tradies and, I have recently discovered, would-be horse racing commentators. They are the ones who have made our brand what it is over all these decades, and we are celebrating with them and with our communities,” she said in the report.

Today Mitre 10 (New Zealand) Ltd is a Kiwi co-operative of 84 locally owned stores nationwide, collectively employing over 8,000 team members across the nation.
