Telstra’s Potential Productivity Boost

The ageing CDMA mobile network is due to be replaced with the Next G™ network on January 28, so Telstra is encouraging retailers to also enjoy the added potential productivity benefits that come from the Next G™ network. Preliminary research compiled on behalf of Telstra and Ericsson by economist firm Econtech found respondents already using the network enjoyed an average increase in business productivity of 9.3 percent.

According to respected research analysts IDC, the retail and wholesale sector had a combined business mobile spend of $525 million during 2005. That’s a lot of mobile use. The Econtech study also found that the highest productivity gains were achieved by businesses that operated in rural and remote areas with staff working outside the traditional office. It found productivity gains were generated by:

 

  • Employees remotely accessing information through Next G™ mobile broadband, so they could work out of the office and no longer require administrative staff to supply information.
  • Using Next G™ mobile broadband to access the internet while travelling to convert dead travel time into productive time. Some of the customers interviewed also saved time and money by not connecting to slower networks at hotels and/or hotspots.
  • Using video calling to provide on the spot technical troubleshooting. For instance, transmitting live images of difficult repair tasks.
  • Using of the Next G™ network to improve inventory management by recording and sending details of parts and equipment used (or needed) through the network.Case Study: JH Williams & Sons

The Tweed Valley terrain will always have areas that will never have 100 percent coverage, but the Next G™ network is an improvement over the GSM network and the coverage continues to improve.

Peter said the move to the Next G™ network was the first stage of a technology transformation designed to upgrade the company’s overall communications and computer infrastructure, linking sites, and providing remote access to company systems.
