QLD Celebrates Excellence
The Queensland hardware industry recognised excellence and achievements at the Hardware Association of Queensland (HAQ) annual Industry Awards & Gala Dinner, held at the Brisbane Convention Centre on November 22.
More than 170 members and guests traveled from all over Queensland to attend the night which kicked off with pre drinks in a friendly and warm atmosphere. Many members used the opportunity to meet their peers while many more caught up with old friends.
MC Samantha Kume then opened the proceedings by announcing the first nominees and winners. No less than 53 stores had been nominated across eight categories (ten categories in total) and a huge effort had gone into ensuring that the judging process remained as fair and accurate as possible. A special mention must go to Bob Gordon, John Lang, Brian Lee and Lisa Nicolle, who amongst them managed to ensure that every store was judged at least twice.
Comedian Jimmy Poulos then took to the stage with some hilarious (and somewhat irreverent) entertainment, followed by a performance by the ever so skilled Azul Jazz Trio. A $1,500 Travel Voucher Door Prize was then given away to one lucky guest followed by more awards.
It was an especially magical night for Turner’s Mitre 10 Home & Trade. After winning the award for Category 4 (Retail Store over 2500 m²) they were then judged to be HAQ Grand Champion. This is the sixth similar award for Turner’s after they recently won the best retailer – large format and best retailer – overall categories at the Kingaroy Chamber Of Commerce and Industry Awards, as well as the award for best large format store both in Queensland and Australia at the Mitre 10 Expo.
Vanessa Miller, State Manager, IC Frith & Associates, was only too pleased with the night. “It was glamour all the way for the awards night,” she said. “I thought it was the best night yet. Excellent food and music. The evening flowed beautifully without a dull moment to be found.”
Terry Geritz, Sales Manager, Group Deals QLD, Commonwealth Bank, had similarly positive words. “All the staff from the Commonwealth Bank had a great night at the awards and special thanks goes to Lisa Nicolle for making it such an enjoyable and relaxed occasion,” he said.
The night was also a special occasion for Danks’ John Reece, who celebrates 45 years in the hardware business.
The HAQ Industry Awards & Gala Dinner night would not have been possible without the dedicated support of all the sponsors. The organisers are indebted to them for making it possible. “The awards are only made possible with the generosity of our sponsors and we would like to thank all of them,” said HAQ President Brian Lee. “Firstly our gold and corporate sponsors, BDS, Australia Post, I.C Frith, the Commonwealth Bank, Toshiba, M10, Danks, Dulux and Wattyl and also our Bronze Sponsor Cement Australia,” he said.
“All the stores nominated for this year’s awards have once again been judged members of the HAQ executive and the HAQ wish to thank all the stores for their time during the judging process and congratulate all nominees, finalists and winners for their efforts.”
