Woolworths Ipswich Store

Woolworths and its US joint partner, Lowe’s, announced Ipswich in Queensland as their latest site location in their impending battle to wrestle market share from its hardware rivals. The announcement was made on June 23, with construction to start in August or September in the hope that it will be ready for opening during the second half of 2011. The 12,500m2 store will be built on the Orion Town Centre site at Springfield Central and will feature retail and trade areas, as well as a garden centre. Woolworths-Lowe’s estimates that the opening of the store will create 130 fulltime and part-time jobs.

The Ipswich store marks the retail giant’s first foray into Queensland after announcing in April that Maitland would be the first store in New South Wales. In Victoria, Woolworths-Lowe’s has already made public its intention to open stores in Burnside, Carrum Downs, Coolaroo, Hawthorn East, Knoxfield, Mornington, North Geelong, Oakleigh South, Preston, South Morang and Wendouree.

An earlier announcement was also made regarding Woolworths-Lowe’s intention to open a store in Bendigo. However, a Woolworths spokesperson said that negotiations with the land owner failed and the Bendigo store was scrapped. It is still Woolworths intention to find a suitable store location in Bendigo.
