Two more Mitre 10 MEGA stores are set to open early next year in Victoria. They will be located in Lilydale and Campbellfield. The stores will essentially be the same layout as the existing stores, with Lilydale slightly smaller and Campbellfield, slightly larger. Jeff Rogut, Marketing Manager – MEGA, said the plan is for MEGA stores to be established in every capital city and strategic country towns, but high land prices and availability are constraining factors. “There are very few one hectare-plus sites left in the capital cities and innovative designs of buildings will be required to establish stores,” said Rogut. “For example, at Modbury in South Australia we were able to put down a 7,000 sq m store by putting most of the carparking in the basement.” Rogut confirmed Mitre 10’s commitment to the MEGA strategy. “Large format stores with ‘everything under one roof’ is a growth platform in Australia and something that customers enjoy shopping in,” said Rogut.

Meanwhile, Mitre 10 has announced plans for another MEGA store in the New Zealand north island town of Palmerston North. Seven stores have already opened across NZ, with two more currently under construction. The Palmerston site, which will span 2.4 hectares, will feature a drive-thru timber yard, café and large outdoor garden centre. “Mitre 10 Palmerston North is one of 20 of our new destination stores we’re rolling out nationwide,” said Peter Stewart, head of Mitre 10 communications. The Palmerston MEGA is expected to open in mid-2006.
