New Home For Bunnings HQ

Bunnings has relocated its National Store Support Centre to a new home in Hawthorn East. The move comes after operating out of the city in offices on Bourke Street for 36 years – the last decade as Bunnings, and before that as McEwans.

The new Cato Street offices house 275 team members in a three-level building that covers 5,000 square meters. According to Bunnings Managing Director, John Gillam, the move to Cato Street has been in the pipeline for a considerable time, with the search for a new site beginning in 2000.

“With more than 275 of us, the Bourke Street offices were bursting at the seams,” he said. “In order to continue to support the growth of our business the move became essential.” A number of areas were looked at before Bunnings settled on Hawthorn East, in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs. “Hawthorn East provided a perfect solution in that it is easily accessible from the CBD, whilst having the space available to develop a facility to suit our needs and, most importantly, delivering this at reduced costs. At Bunnings we are always looking to lower costs so we can continue to deliver the lowest prices to our customers,” said Gillam.

The Cato St office’s open plan design complements informal communication between the different business functions. “The move to the new centre has created a stronger team environment,” said Mr Gillam. “For instance, the store operations and trade teams are now working side-by side, instead of one team being in Coburg and the other in Bourke Street.” Bunnings signature colours, green and red, are used extensively throughout the new headquarters, but in lighter tones more suited to an office environment. The well-known hammer motif will also be emblazoned on the frosted glass facade of the building.

Bunnings’ 5,500 Victorian team members will also benefit from the new store support centre when they experience development activities in new training rooms that feature the latest multi-media technology.
