Brisbane Fasteners thrives under CSS group
Brisbane Fasteners and Engineering Supplies Pty Ltd, joined CSS (Construction Supply Specialists) in 2004, after seeking to join a buying group full of like-minded business owners, as well as expand its showroom and deal with leading brands.
With over 30 years in the fastener industry, store owner Gary Beeston, initially established the store as a small start-up business in Brendale, Queensland. After working as manager for a fastener company for over 14 years, a national takeover took place by one of his now competitors. It was then that Gary decided to open his own store and test his experience and knowledge in 1999.
Thriving under CSS
After five years of trading Gary began sourcing a young buying group which was
full of like-minded business owners.
“We joined CSS (Construction Supply Specialists) in 2004 after consultation with CSS managing director, Jeff Wellard. This offered a huge opportunity for us to expand our showroom offering and also deal with the leading brands,” he said.
Well known as ‘the name behind the names’, CSS is also popular for ‘bringing corporate advantages to independents’, according to Gary, who said the group has provided his store with a great deal of growth and many opportunities along the way. “The group itself has had fantastic growth, now boasting 55 members across the country. CSS also has a firm reputation of honesty and integrity throughout the fastener industry. By being a part of this group, they, and we in turn, enjoy enthusiastic support from all our supplier partners,” Gary said.
After many years of trading, Gary decided to move his store to a 700 square metre premises on a main road, in the centre of the Brendale Industrial Estate.
“This proved to be a great location and we had an increase in foot traffic straight away. The premises was extended in 2014 to 1,000 square metres, on the 2,000 square metre site, which allowed us to quantity buy all our fast moving items and also ensured great savings for us and for our customers,” Gary said.
Boasting well over 100 years of combined fastener experience invested into its staff , Gary believes this high level of expertise ensures the store is second to none when it comes to solutions for fastener needs. “We stock the complete range of fastener and ancillary products such as: hand tools, power tools, silicones, adhesives, cutting and threading tools, engineering supplies and industrial supplies. Th is makes us a one stop shop for our ever expanding
customer base. We also provide sales representation and a delivery service to our
customers,” he said.
Customer demographics include residents from north Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast, with customers awash with all diff erent types of businesses and industry, according to Gary.
“We pride ourselves on catering for all requirements. I guess we try to be all things to all customers. It makes us feel good to know that our customers appreciate when we go the extra mile for them too,” he said.
Growing the business
Sales have increased year on year from the very beginning, even through the 08/09 Global Financial Crisis, according to Gary, with the store’s very best asset being word of mouth from its customers. Gary said he and his team are always looking to new markets for increased sales, and in the last two years have seen great success in the domestic building market, with the introduction of its F.A.T.VAN™, which is a fasteners, adhesives and tools van.
“Th e F.A.T.VAN™ visits building sites directly, and is fully stocked with builder’s fasteners, tools and accessories. This is a growing area for us and we plan to introduce more F.A.T.VANs™ to service areas planned for the future,” he said.
“Access to CSS advertising and support has also been a leap forward for us. Our personalised publications of the F.A.T.P.I.G. (Fasteners, Adhesives, Tools, Product Information Guide) and the F.A.T.mag (Fasteners, Adhesives, Tools Magazine), which is published quarterly, includes advertised sale specials, and articles about the industry and its suppliers. Th ese
publications have increased sales and foot traffic in store,” Gary said.
With fasteners remaining the store’s primary bread and butter, Gary said the store’s ancillary products and showroom products are also growing all the time; however, this presents a challenge of continually rotating stock, refreshing outdated/tiring displays, updating
merchandising and point of sale material.
Plans for the future…
Future plans for Brisbane Fasteners and Engineering Supplies include remaining involved in the continuous marketing opportunities offered by CSS, as well as the implementation of small trade days at the store. Th e trade days see a chosen supplier running several demonstrations on new and exciting products, as well as a complimentary barbecue for customers.
“We run our own trade day with CSS and most suppliers towards the end of the year, which is around November this year. On this day we encourage all our customers to come to the store, have something to eat, watch interesting supplier demonstrations, as well as hopefully take advantage of some special deals. We also run these days to not only thank our customers, but our valued business partners as well,” he said.
For now, Brisbane Fasteners and Engineering Supplies will continue to service its customers not only through its ever improving store, but also through its very popular F.A.T.VANs™.
